Guided Docent Tours Every Wednesday!

The Steamboat Art Museum presents guided Docent Tours of the current exhibition, Four Directions, Common Paths, on Wednesdays at 11:30 am at the museum, 8th & Lincoln Avenue. Enjoy a deeper look into this exceptional exhibit featuring the works of four of the West’s preeminent landscape painters – Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young. This exhibition lauded as one of the finest exhibitions of contemporary painters currently showing in the west, shares their work as well as the synergistic impact of their 30-year relationships – a story of kinship, adventure, and cross-pollination to become their best.

Admission is free. No pre-registration necessary.

Dennis Pendleton – Watercolor Workshop 2021

July 30, 31 and August 1, 2021.   Fee: $350.00

Join Dennis Pendleton for a 3-day Plein Air Watercolor workshop in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and inspire your creative development. Immersing yourself in the lush summertime mountain setting, learn everything from how to simplify the complex landscape to capturing sparkling color to creating a strong sense of light in your paintings. Steamboat Springs is rich in beautiful subject matter, from working ranches with old barns and haystacks to dramatic mountainscapes with quaking aspen trees, you will revel in the scenery.

Whether you are new to watercolor painting or a more advanced student, Dennis will help push your skills to the next level through demonstrations, individual attention, and friendly critiques. Basic watercolor experience needed. Students are responsible for their lodging and meals.

CELEBRATION WEEK – Four Directions, Common Paths: OBERG, SMITH, WHITCOMB, YOUNG

July 27 – 30, 2021

Join us at SAM to celebrate the four outstanding artists featured in this retrospective of their 30-year personal relationship and work. The artists will be in Steamboat Springs with events for our members and the public from July 27 through July 30. Special guests with long associations with the artists include Tim Newton, Collector, and Director Emeritus of the Salmagundi Art Club; Seth Hopkins, Executive Director of the Booth Western Art Museum – USA Today’s 2020 Best Western Art Museum; Sue Simpson Gallagher, owner of Simpson Gallagher Gallery, Cody, WY and first Curator and Trustee of the National Wildlife Museum of Art. The events include two special panels with the artists and special guests and public reception.

SAM’s Plein Air Event brings the community and visitors together with artists from near and far as they paint on location.  Showcasing the beauty of the Yampa Valley, the paintings that are created during this extraordinary week spotlight historic landmarks, ranches, the community of Steamboat Springs and our growing arts and cultural offerings.  – This event is uniquely Steamboat!

Richie Vios – Watercolor with Confidence Workshop 2021

Dates: October 1, 2 & 3, 2021    Fee: $350.00

Join Richie Vios and explore the wonderful world of Plein Air painting through the elusive and always interesting watercolor medium.  From beginners to advanced artists, Richie will guide each individual to better understand the watercolor medium through live demonstrations as he creates a process for every skill level and medium. He will help bring your work to the next level by working with individuals to identify and solve problems, and set goals through both personal and group critiques. Artists will also receive instruction on the fundamentals of art and design, drawing and painting. This includes color, composition, value, form, brushwork, perspective, and much more. Richie will help you develop your skills, painting visualization, and become the confident artist that you want to be.
