Steamboat Art Museum Presents Ekphrasis* 2021: A Visual Writing Event in honor of Susan deWardt

Steamboat Art Museum with support from Steamboat Magazine and Off the Beaten Path Bookstore, invite all writers to participate in the 2022 ekphrastic writing event.

*Ekphrasis is the use of words to comment on a piece of visual art. One of the earliest cited forms of ekphrasis occurs in The Iliad, where Homer provides a long and discursive account of the elaborate scenes embossed on the shield of Achilles.

 
  • Step 1: Take a leisurely stroll through the Steamboat Art Museum (admission is free). Be inspired by the exceptional exhibition Oil Painters of America 31st National Exhibition of Traditional Oils.  Over two hundred paintings in the widest variety of subjects provide a feast for the imagination. 
  • Step 2: Choose a painting that “speaks to you”. Write a story or description, poetry or prose, not to exceed 750 words.
  • Step 3: Submit your work with application form on-line to Steamboat Art Museum by Thursday, July 1, 2022 5:00pm
  • Step 4: Tuesday, July 21, 2021, 5:30PM Celebrate your creativity at the Awards and Readings Reception at SAM. Enjoy selected readings by our community’s Celebrity Readers. Awards will be given in adult and youth categories.

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges including representatives from Off the Beaten Path and Steamboat Magazine

  • Entry fee: Free for SAM members and youth (18 and under), $15 for non-members Entry includes admission to awards reception.
  • Awards and Readings Reception July 20, 2022 5:30PM at SAM
    Free for Members, submitting authors and youth ~ $15 non-members
